A BBQ cover protects your grill from UV damage, rain, bird droppings, tree sap, and salt corrosion. These factors can speed up wear on cooking surfaces, knobs, and finishes. Without a cover, UV exposure in Australia can make plastic parts brittle in 18-24 months. Metal surfaces can rust from morning dew. Covers help maintain resale value and reduce cleaning between cooking sessions.
How to measure for a BBQ cover?
To measure your BBQ, follow these steps:
Close the lid.
Measure three dimensions:
Width: from left to right, including side shelves.
Depth: from front to back, including the control panel.
Height: from the ground to the highest point of the hood.
Use a tape measure and record measurements in centimetres. Add 5-10cm to each dimension for proper fit and weather protection. Measure at the widest points, as BBQ shapes can vary.
For built-in BBQs, measure the entire width, including surrounding benchtops for full coverage. If using a drop-in cover, measure just the grill module. Check for side burners and other parts that may be higher than the main hood. Round measurements up to the next cover size to ensure a good fit.
Can you put a BBQ cover on a hot BBQ?
Do not place a BBQ cover on hot equipment. Polyester fabric can melt at around 250°C, which can cause a fire risk and ruin the cover. After cooking, turn off all burners and close the lid. Wait at least 45-60 minutes for gas BBQs or 2-3 hours for charcoal BBQs to cool before covering. Touch the hood and control panel to ensure they are cool.
Can you put a BBQ cover in the washing machine?
Do not wash BBQ covers in a machine. The agitation can damage waterproof coatings and seams. It can also leave fabric residue in your washing machine. Hand cleaning is best to keep the fabric's protective features and structure intact.
How to clean a BBQ cover?
To clean your BBQ cover, shake off loose debris. Use a soft brush to remove dust, leaves, and spider webs. Mix warm water with mild detergent (avoid harsh chemicals), and apply it with a soft sponge or cloth, working from top to bottom. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose to remove all soap. Hang the cover to air dry completely before storing.
How to keep a BBQ cover from blowing off?
Elasticated hems help keep the cover secure in winds up to 40-50 km/h when sized correctly. For strong winds, use adjustable buckle straps under the BBQ. You can also use weighted sandbags on the lower edges of the cover. Ensure the cover size matches your BBQ measurements within 5-10cm to avoid excess fabric that can catch the wind.
